Get real, Senator Biden. You are not poor, no matter how hard you try.

For some reason this really angers me, and I haven't heard anyone else talk about it. Joe Biden is a decent guy, but his recent attempts to portray himself as "average" or even "poor" are really over the top. Are we really supposed to believe that Senator Biden struggles every month to pay his utility bill or fill his car with gas?
From Joe Biden's speech during his first appearance as Obama's running mate:
"Ladies and gentlemen, your kitchen table is like mine. You sit there at night before you put the kids -- after you put the kids to bed and you talk, you talk about what you need. You talk about how much you are worried about being able to pay the bills. Well, ladies and gentlemen, that's not a worry John McCain has to worry about. It's a pretty hard experience. He'll have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at. Folks, again, it's not political sloganary when I say we literally can't afford four more years of this non-energy policy written by and for the oil companies, making us more and more dependent from hostile nations on our ability to run this country and literally, not figuratively, literally putting America's security at risk, we can't afford four more years of a foreign policy that has shredded our alliances and sacrificed our moral standing around the world."
Ok let's get this straight, Joe Biden's current salary is $169,300 and has been in the 6-figure range for many decades. He actually earned $298,200 in 2007. His wife also contributes to the family income as a college instructor. His lifetime earnings in the Senate is many millions. He has a law degree and is one of the most powerful men in the country. At any time he can quit the Senate and make 7-figures as a board member of Fortune-500 corporations or sign a 7-figure book deal. I haven't seen pictures of his house, but I have a feeling it's pretty damn nice.
And he is trying to connect with the more than 70% of Americans who earn less than $50,000 a year, by contrasting himself with the "rich" John McCain, as if there is something criminal in being rich (most Americans would say that $298k a year with the ability to make 7 figures at the drop of a hat is PRETTY DAMN RICH).
And doesn't every American who is not financially independent desire to be so? Is it Cindy McCain's fault that her father worked his ass off and was very good at what he did? Isn't that the "American Dream"? Kinda like the dream Mr. Biden probably had decades ago to become a powerful U.S. Senator, which he accomplished? And now he pretends to be an average Joe?
GET REAL MR. BIDEN.
Note: McCain has since responded to Biden's "kitchen table" rhetoric pretty effectively by alluding to the years he spent as a POW, without a single kitchen table, or even a chair.
